$4.1 million infrastructure upgrades in Antigonish, N.S., to make way for more housing

All three levels of government are spending money to upgrade water, wastewater and stormwater systems in Antigonish, N.S.

According to the province, the upgrades on West Street and James Street will benefit a total of 423 existing homes and “lay the groundwork” for up to 323 additional residential units.

“We want to create more opportunities for housing and to help our communities grow,” said Nova Scotia Municipal Affairs Minister John A. MacDonald in a news release.

The total cost of the project is $4.1 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund. Of that, the federal government will spend $1.6 million, the Nova Scotia government is contributing nearly $1.4 million and the Town of Antigonish is spending $1.1 million.

“This investment is vital to helping our town grow responsibly while improving the infrastructure needed to support new and affordable housing,” said Town of Antigonish Mayor Sean Cameron. “By working together across all levels of government, we are strengthening the foundation for a thriving town where more people can find a place to call home.”

The project includes the replacement and rehabilitation of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure which will ensure future developments in the area are fully serviced, said the province.

It also said under the fund agreement, the province will receive $170.9 million over a 10-year period from the federal government to support population growth.
