2 Millbrook First Nation councillors resign after group chat that ‘victimized many’ discovered

Two Millbrook First Nation councillors have resigned in the wake of the discovery of a group chat that allegedly involved discussions of sexual offences.

In a news release, the Millbrook First Nation confirmed councillors Garrett Gloade and Pius Knockwood handed in their resignation letters at the most recent Millbrook chief and council meeting.

“The community of Millbrook First Nation has been shaken by the recent discovery of the online group chat that [allegedly] included two Millbrook First Nation Council members, staff, and community members,” the release reads. “The activity in the group chat victimized many and has been devastating to read.”

The release says the Millbrook RCMP has launched an investigation into the discussions and allegations of sexual offences in the group chat.

“We would like to remind the public to be mindful of what they share on social media as these are public platforms that are visible to many, including minors, who can be greatly impacted,” the release reads. “There are several individuals who have been victimized in these messages, so please be cautious of causing further trauma when sharing information.

“We encourage anyone who is struggling from this incident to please reach out. You are not alone.”

The release says supports are available at the Millbrook Health Centre, which is open daily from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Cindy Bayers, strategic communications with the Nova Scotia RCMP, said the investigation is in the early stages and no charges have been laid.
