U.S. man found guilty of 2024 homicide in northeastern New Brunswick

A 49-year-old American man has been found guilty following a murder, attempted murder and day-long manhunt in northeastern New Brunswick almost two years ago.

Keith Martin of Maine was the subject of an emergency alert in the Esgenoôpetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation area on Sept. 5, 2024.

The alert was initiated after a 48-year-old man was found dead and another man was injured following a “firearm-related incident.”

The message told people to stay inside with their doors locked and to avoid the area while police searched for the suspect.

Police said they were looking for Martin, who they believed was carrying a firearm “with dangerous intent.”

He was found and arrested almost a day later following extensive searches.

Martin was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the incident.

He was found guilty of the second-degree murder of Mark Dwayne Mitchell last Thursday.

He was also found guilty of the attempted murder of Sylvio Savoie.

Martin was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on Sept. 15.
