Three stranded snowmobilers were rescued near Upper Tetagouche Lake, N.B., earlier this month.
The Campbellton RCMP detachment received a report around noon on Feb. 17 that three people had been stranded on their snowmobiles for about 15 hours.
Because of the location and inclement weather, the RCMP reached out to Ambulance New Brunswick, the Robertville and Sainte-Anne fire departments, New Brunswick’s Justice and Public Safety, and the Chaleur Skidoo Club to assist with the rescue.
“With access to an Emergency SOS system on their phones, regular communication was made between the three individuals and first responders, however, concern for their wellbeing grew when they described feeling weak due to the cold wind and winter elements,” reads a news release from the New Brunswick RCMP.
A member of the Chaleur Skidoo Club, driving a groomer, led three volunteer firefighters on snowmobiles to the stranded people, who had since found shelter in a nearby ice fishing tent.
The snowmobilers were then taken to a heated snowmobile club around 5:30 p.m., about 20 hours after they first became stranded. Police say no medical attention was required.
When venturing deep into the woods, the RCMP says people should take necessary precautions, such as:
- be prepared for changing weather
- carry emergency supplies
- pack extra clothing
- bring a cellphone charger
- always inform others of your itinerary
“We are very grateful for the selflessness that these individuals displayed, risking their own lives,” said Cpl. Réjean Richard of the Campbellton RCMP. “Without their dedication and determination, this story could have had a different ending.”
