Organizers of the 48th annual Fredericton Marathon say there was an increase of participants for every distance category this past weekend. More than 3,600 runners took off Sunday at 7 a.m. from the start line at Queen’s Square, with their 42.2 km route including the Westmorland Street Bridge, the Marysville Bridge and the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge. It was an increase of more than 500 runners over last year. The two top finishers for the marathon’s male division were Louis April of Saint-Clément, Que. and Jean-Marc Dorion of Moncton, N.B., with a time of two hours, 31 minutes, and 40 seconds. The winner of the marathon’s female division was Sarah Mulcahy of Fort Kent, Maine with a finish time of three hours, three minutes and seven seconds. Sunday morning’s weather switched between rain and overcast conditions with a temperature around 10 C. Half marathon runners began their 21.1 km race on Sunday at 7:20 a.m., with 10 km runners beginning at 8:15 a.m. An elite 5 km run, an open 5 km run and youth runs were held on Saturday.
