Scoop There It Is: Saint John, N.B., asks residents to help name snowplows

Saint John, N.B., streets could soon be cleared by “Marco Plowo” or “Clearopathra.”

The city is asking residents to name four of its snowplows as it teams up with a local radio station to launch its second Name the Plow contest.

Starting Monday, residents can vote online for their favourite names from this list, which was selected by Saint John Common Council:

• Salt ‘n Pusher
• Slushy
• Scoop There It Is
• West Warden
• Captain Clearway
• Ctrl + Salt + Delete
• Marco Plowo
• Clearopathra
• Plow Mater
• Qey (Hello in Wolastoq)

Voting will run until March 24. The four winning names will be announced on March 25.

“Winning names will be proudly displayed on the sides of the plows with decals and featured in promotional photos and videos on social media,” said the City of Saint John in a news release.

“It’s your chance to make a mark on the city and see your chosen names rolling through the streets all winter long.”

Saint John last held a Name the Plow contest in January 2023, when it called on residents to submit names for four snowplows. After receiving 1,000 submissions, the city decided to name eight plows, rather than four.

Residents were then asked to vote for their favourites from a shortlist of 22 names. Some of the winning names included “Plow Chicka Plow Plow,” “Skip the Ditches” and “Reversing Snowfalls.”

Saint John says its fleet clears snow and applies salt, sand and brine to 1,160 lane kilometres of road – longer than the distance from Saint John to Ottawa – every winter. It also maintains 225 kilometres of sidewalk.
