Saint John man accused of assaulting neighbour, uttering threats: police

Saint John police arrested a man who allegedly attempted to assault a neighbour, then returned home where he threatened self-harm and refused to co-operate with police, said a Sunday news release.

At approximately 6:18 p.m. police arrested the suspect for assault and uttering threats outside his home. He remains in police custody. No serious injuries were reported from the incident.

Police said they believe the 48-year-old man was intoxicated during the incident. They responded to a call for a person in crisis at his residence at 3:47 p.m. and began negotiating with him upon arrival.

Patrol service members, canine units and negotiators all responded to the scene.

Officers contained the area but said the situation did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready.

Police closed Grandview Avenue between Hickey and McLaughlin roads during negotiations but it has since reopened. They said there was no threat to public safety but police asked residents in the area to stay inside their homes during the operation.

The investigation is ongoing.
