One in hospital, several displaced following Moncton fire

One person was injured and several were displaced following a fire at a 10-storey apartment building in Moncton, N.B., Saturday night.

One person was injured and several were displaced following a fire at a 10-storey apartment building in Moncton, N.B.

The Moncton Fire Department was called around 6:30 p.m. Saturday to the building at 136 Cornhill Street. The fire was on the eighth floor.

Platoon Chief Paul Bruens said firefighters rescued one person, who was treated on scene before being taken to hospital.

Bruens said the sprinkler system was activated, which resulted in water damage to some units. In total, he said 19 units with 19 people were evacuated. The Canadian Red Cross is now providing temporary lodging.

Initially, 24 firefighters were called to the scene, with an additional 11 brought in. Crews were on scene until approximately 11:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
