New Brunswick ending electric vehicle incentive

Published:

The Government of New Brunswick said it will end its Electric Vehicle Incentive Program on July 1.

Treasury Board Minister René Legacy said the program helped people buy electric vehicles during their introduction but the province is pivoting with Ottawa.

“With the federal government announcing that their electric vehicle rebate program would be paused, we used the opportunity to redirect our focus, as well, but still giving New Brunswickers time to take advantage of the New Brunswick rebate program,” Legacy said.

New Brunswickers can apply for the rebate through NB Power if they purchase an electric vehicle by June 30, said a Friday news release. Buyers have 30 days to submit their receipt and application.

Legacy said the government will shift its focus to more charging infrastructure to encourage sales and reduce “range anxiety.” He said the program was a success that allowed the province to exceed their target to make 6 per cent of light-duty vehicle sales electric.

Jean Marc Landry, NB Power’s chief customer chair, said they were pleased to work with the government to support electric vehicle adoption.

There are almost 7,000 electric vehicles on the road in New Brunswick, a number expected to grow with lowering prices, said the release.
