After more than a year as the acting chief medical officer of health for New Brunswick, Dr. Yves Léger has officially assumed the role.

New Brunswick named Léger the new chief medical officer for the province on Thursday. He has been acting in the role since December 2023, when former chief Jennifer Russell stepped down.

“Dr. Léger brings extensive experience in public health, as well as a deep understanding of the New Brunswick context,” said Health Minister John Dornan in a news release. “He has done an excellent job as acting chief medical officer, and he has my full confidence moving forward.”

Léger, who is originally from Beausoleil, has served as a regional medical officer of health and acting deputy chief medical officer since joining Public Health in 2007.

He studied medicine at the Université de Sherbrooke and completed his residency in public health and preventive medicine at the University of Toronto.
