More than 1,100 people running in N.B. local elections next month

The nomination period for New Brunswick’s local government, rural district advisory committee and district education council elections has closed, and hundreds of candidates have thrown their hats in the ring.

The provincial government says 1,102 people submitted nomination papers for the 588 council positions in 77 local governments across New Brunswick. The submission period ended on Friday with two council positions in two communities still vacant.

Twenty-five mayors were acclaimed to their positions, which means there will be 52 mayoral elections. There will also be elections to determine 211 councillor contests with another 136 seats being filled by acclamation.

“Elections will be required in five of the 12 rural district advisory committees,” a news release from the province reads. “Twenty-six positions were filled by acclamation, while four remained vacant, with no candidates running.

“Sixty-three candidates filed nomination papers for the 68 district education council positions. Eleven contests had more than one candidate offering, meaning elections will take place. Eighteen positions remained vacant at the close of nominations.”

Candidates have until 5 p.m. Monday to withdraw their nominations.

All elections in New Brunswick will be held on May 11.
