Fredericton council approves study for renovation of 40-year-old police station

Fredericton City Council has approved a feasibility study that will look at the possible renovation of a 40-year-old police station.

A motion before council on Monday recommended they direct the chief administrative officer to draft a feasibility study on renovating the Fredericton Police Force headquarters on Queen Street.

Council passed the motion as part of their consent agenda.

The report notes the building was originally built in 1983 to serve a population of roughly 44,000 people. As of 2024, Fredericton’s city population was more than 72,000.

Service demands have grown in the past 40 years and many systems in the 30,000-square-foot building are nearing their end of life.

“The proposed feasibility study will include staff engagement, functional programming, site analysis, conceptual design options, and capital and operating cost assessments,” the motion reads.

“The study will also develop an implementation strategy that allows police operations to continue uninterrupted during future construction and renovation activities.”

The motion also notes the study will look at building a new satellite station to support services.
