Court hears testimony on police operation at Moncton double-murder trial

The double-murder trial in Moncton has entered its second month.

The Janson Baker double-murder trial has entered its second month at the Moncton Law Courts.

On Tuesday, the jury heard from a member of the RCMP’s Major Crime unit who testified she conducted surveillance on several people in the Moncton area before and following the homicides of Bernard and Rose-Marie Saulnier.

Baker has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the Saulniers, who were both shot in the head and killed on Sept. 7, 2019.

The Crown called Const. Melissa Cormier, who testified she observed a silver Hyundai Sonata while conducting surveillance after the homicides.

A previous witness testified Baker drove him in a Hyundai Sonata to the home of the Dieppe couple after midnight on the morning of the murders.

Cormier also testified about her role in J-Trilogy, a police operation that resulted in multiple arrests on Aug. 28, 2019, 10 days before the murders.

Drugs and firearms were seized from several homes around New Brunswick, including a duplex on Dominion Street in Moncton.

“I had observed multiple drug transactions at the Dominion address,” said Cormier.

Cormier said in July, before the raids took place, she observed Jesse Logue and Sylvio Saulnier coming and going, amongst others.

Court previously heard that Sylvio Saulnier, son of Bernard and Rose-Marie, owned the property on Dominion and was involved in the drug trade.

During the Crown’s opening statements on Jan. 6, the jury was told Sylvio Saulnier’s associates believed he was a police informant.

During the afternoon session, court heard phone conversations recorded by the RCMP between Logue and others while he was incarcerated, just days following the police raids.

Const. Marc LeBreton of the RCMP’s Provincial Intelligence Unit testified the voice on the phone from inside the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac was Logue’s.

LeBreton also said the woman on the other line for some of the 93 calls that were recorded was Monique Boyer, Logue’s girlfriend.

Boyer’s name has come up repeatedly during the trial.

During playback of the profanity-laced conversations, Logue sounded very frustrated with his situation and extremely angry with Sylvio Saulnier, saying numerous calls to him went unanswered.

Court is scheduled to return on Wednesday.
