Campobello Island, N.B., seasonal ferry service begins early

The ferry between Deer Island and Campobello Island in New Brunswick will run longer this season.

The province of New Brunswick says the ferry service between Deer Island and Campobello Island, an island near the border of Maine, has been extended this year.

Crossings start Monday and will be made seven days a week, weather permitting, until Thanksgiving weekend.

Campobello Island has one permanent link to the mainland, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge in Lubec, Maine.

People living on the island must cross the Canada-U.S. border two times each way to make a round trip to other parts of Canada.

Campobello Island ferry crossings normally start in June.

“The community of Campobello really appreciates this, as this vital link to the mainland is important for a remote island like ours. I would also like to thank East Coast Ferries Ltd. for all their hard work in getting ready for the upcoming season,” said Campobello Island Mayor Harvey Matthews in a provincial news release.

“We continue to work closely with East Coast Ferries Ltd. to ensure this crossing remains both an accessible and reliable transportation corridor within our province.”

The ferry season also started early last year due to the trade dispute between Canada and the United States.
