Windy weather causing power outages across the Maritimes

Thousands of people lost power Easter Sunday as a windy weather system arrived in the Maritimes.

“At the peak around 7:40 p.m., approximately 33,500 customers were without power. In total, about 57,000 customers were affected by the weather event,” NB Power wrote in a post on social media Monday morning.

In the post, NB Power explained Sunday’s province-wide outages were caused by strong winds that lasted all day.

NB Power said power has been restored to 47,500 customers and that crews are still working to try to restore power to all of its customers.

“We currently have around 500 people supporting the restoration efforts,” said NB Power.

The utility thanked customers for their patience.

Part of the province was under a wind warning Sunday afternoon.

NB Power shared on social media Friday that it was monitoring the approaching system.

“Based on the most current forecasts, we are prepping our equipment, and trucks to ensure we are fully prepared to respond safely and efficiently if outages occur,” the utility wrote.

The wind caused some trees to fall behind homes in the Moncton area.

Windy conditions were also present in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, with Environment Canada issuing wind warnings in both provinces.

Nova Scotia Power said crews are “prepared and positioned” throughout the province.

As of 10:30 a.m. Monday less than 600 Nova Scotia Power customers had no power, down from as many as 11,000 on Sunday but some of the outages were not weather related.

Approximately 4,000 Maritime Electric customers in Prince Edward Island were without power Sunday evening.
