Snowfall Warnings issued for Maritimes but storm path trends further east

A Nor’easter will move north from the coastline of the Carolinas this weekend. The storm is expected to come close enough to bring Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island snow and gusty winds. Snowfall warnings were issued on Saturday for parts of Nova Scotia. The path the storm is expected to take has trended further to the east, reducing snow amounts expected for some areas.

Weather Alerts

A Yellow Warning - Snowfall is in effect for eastern Halifax, Guysborough, Pictou, Antigonish, southern Inverness, Victoria, Richmond and Cape Breton Counties in Nova Scotia.

The warning covers Sunday evening until early Monday afternoon. Snow could total 15 to 35 cm with the highest amounts expected in Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough, Richmond, and Cape Breton Counties. Gusty northeast winds are expected to create blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility.

The remainder of Nova Scotia is still under a Special Weather Statement. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are possible for the South Shore, western Halifax County, Hants and Colchester Counties. Digby County, the Annapolis Valley and parts of Colchester County can expect slightly lower snowfall around 5 to 15 cm. Gusty northeast winds will create periods of blowing and drifting snow.

A Special Weather Statement continues for Kings and Queens Counties in Prince Edward Island. The statement warns that 5 to 15 cm snow could fall with higher amounts possible for the easternmost communities in Kings County. The snow could be accompanied by northeast gusts of wind between 60 and 80 km/h, creating blowing and drifting snow.

Shift to the east

Beginning late Friday night into Saturday the storm’s movement shows it passing east of Sable Island. That would place some of the heaviest snow just off the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia.

Heavier snow is still possible in eastern parts of that province. Guysborough, Pictou, and Antigonish Counties and much of Cape Breton could still pick up more than 20 cm. Northeast wind gusts from 60 to 80 km/h will accompany the snow Sunday evening and night, reducing visibility on roads and highways.

While the wind strength generally falls short of warning criteria, similar systems with similar gusts have produced power outage pockets in the past.

There is still a risk of snow squalls developing Monday afternoon and evening for parts of northern and eastern Nova Scotia. The North Shore and of the mainland and Inverness/Victoria Counties in Cape Breton could see additional flurries and squalls Monday afternoon into Monday night.
