Significant snowfall expected Sunday for much of the Maritimes

The weekend will end with significant snowfall for parts of the Maritimes.

As of Saturday afternoon, Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings for most of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Nova Scotia

Environment Canada said snow, heavy at times, will begin across Nova Scotia Sunday evening.

It said some communities may see precipitation start as rain, but it is expected to quickly changeover to snow by mid-evening.

“Temperatures will hover near zero in many areas so the snow is expected to be wet, dense, and difficult to clear by hand,” said the warning.

Environment Canada said total snowfall amounts are expected in the range of 15 to 25 cm.

The weather agency said local utility outages are possible.

Conditions are expected to quickly improve across the province Monday morning.

Prince Edward Island

On P.E.I., a snowfall warning has been issued for Kings and Queens counties.

Heavy snowfall is expected to begin late Sunday evening. Environment Canada said about 15 to 25 cm of snowfall is expected.

“Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” said the weather agency.

Conditions should begin to clear around noon Monday.

New Brunswick

As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, no warnings had been issued in New Brunswick.
