A new poll from Narrative Research suggests the ‘Buy Canada’ movement has strong support in Atlantic Canada.
The polling company says “strong majorities” of Atlantic Canadians are willing to pay more and go out their way to purchase Canadian made products, in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.
The poll finds:
- 75 per cent of Atlantic Canadians are much more likely to buy Canadian goods given proposed tariffs
- 73 per cent of Atlantic Canadians are willing to pay an average of 17 per cent more for a product made in Canada versus one that is made in the United States.
- 85 per cent of Atlantic Canadians indicate they’ll spend more time shopping to find out if products are made in Canada before purchasing
- 94 per cent of Atlantic Canadians believe retailers should make it easier to identify products that are made in Canada
- 70 per cent of Atlantic Canadians say they’ll no longer buy a favourite product because it is made in the U.S.
The poll also shows 79 per cent of Atlantic Canadians support the provincial government’s response to tariff threats and 81 per cent support the federal response.
The poll says 92 per cent of Atlantic Canadians support the removal of interprovincial trade barriers and 93 per cent agree the country needs to diversify trade partners to be less reliant on the U.S.
Narrative Research says the online survey was conducted between Feb. 10 and Feb. 19 with 1,136 Atlantic Canadian residents aged 18 years or older.
Narrative Research says results are weighted by region, age, and gender “to reflect the overall adult population of Atlantic Canadians,” with a comparable probability sample accurate to within +2.9 percentage points at the 95 per cent confidence level.
