N.S. pharmacists allowed to administer flu shots as of this fall

HALIFAX -- The Nova Scotia government says many residents will be able to get free flu shots at their local pharmacy starting this fall.

New regulations that went into effect Tuesday give pharmacists the authority to give vaccinations.

Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson says the change should make it easier for people in rural communities to stay healthy.

Nova Scotia is following the lead of New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, which already allow pharmacists to give shots.

The new rules in Nova Scotia also allow pharmacists to administer travel vaccines and interpret blood tests.

The Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists will work with Dalhousie University's Faculty of Pharmacy to ensure training is available for pharmacists who need it.
