Maritimes to be hit by heavy snow and high wind Monday

A powerful Nor’easter will move north from Cape Cod and along the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia on Monday. The storm bringing heavy snow and high winds to parts of the Maritimes.

Here is what to expect province-by-province.

New Brunswick

A Yellow Warning - Winter Storm is in effect for the Bay of Fundy area as well as Moncton and the southeast. A Yellow Warning - Snowfall for inland Charlotte County, Kings County, Queens County, Kent County, and the Miramichi area. A Special Weather Statement extends across the remainder of New Brunswick except for parts of the northwest.

Heavy snow will develop on the Bay of Fundy coastline by early Monday afternoon. The snow then developing across the province afternoon through early evening. The most snow likely to fall south of Fredericton and will total 15-to-25 cm. Fredericton and Miramichi with 10-to-15 cm of snow. Snow totalling lower moving into the north and west of the province.

There has been some forecast guidance showing higher snow amounts around the Moncton area. At the very least there is a risk that locally in the southeast some of the snow could total over 25 cm.

The snow will be accompanied by northeasterly winds with peak gusts of 30-to-60 km/h except 60-to-90 km/h near the Bay of Fundy coastline. The high winds creating extensive blowing and drifting snow. The wind will diminish Monday night into Tuesday morning. A still gust northerly wind for Tuesday.

Impacts will include very poor travel conditions developing in basically the southern half of the province Monday afternoon through evening. An increased risk of power outages near the Bay of Fundy coastline. Have what you need to clear snow at the ready and be prepared for delays and cancellations. Areas under the Special Weather Statement should monitor for an upgrade to a weather warning.

Nova Scotia

An elevated Orange Warning - Winter Storm is in effect for the South Shore. A Yellow Warning - Winter Storm for the remainder of western Nova Scotia as well as Cumberland and Colchester counties. A Yellow Warning - Winter Storm for Victoria County - Cape Breton. A Yellow Warning - Snowfall for the rest of eastern Nova Scotia.

The first of the snow is likely to arrive in the southwest of Nova Scotia between 8 and 10 a.m. Monday. The snow will be falling across western Nova Scotia by near noon on Monday. Eastern areas of the province seeing the snow move through the afternoon. A turn to rain is expected Monday evening and night but heavy snow will have fallen before that happens.

Much of the province can expect 15-to-25 cm of snow. Higher snow amounts of 25-to-40 cm possible up the South Shore and into parts of Halifax County. Higher snow amounts of 25-to-40 cm are also possible for parts of Cape Breton, particularly in Victoria County. The snow will turn heavy and wet, especially with the turn to rain. Take care to not overstrain while clearing.

A northeasterly wind will increase with the falling snow. Expect peak gusts of 50-to-90 km/h to develop Monday afternoon with the strongest gusts at higher terrain and on the coast. The high winds will create extensive blowing snow and whiteout conditions should be expected. The strong wind and heavy snowfall will also increase the risk of power outages.

The higher snowfall rates means that once the snow starts conditions will deteriorate quickly. Be sure to have easy access to snow shovels and snow blowers and that you have fuel for the latter. Avoid or postpone travel in the inclement conditions. Be prepared for delays and cancellations.

Prince Edward Island

A Yellow Warning - Winter Storm has been issued for Prince and Queens Counties. A Yellow Warning - Snowfall in effect for Kings County.

Snow will arrive in Prince Edward Island between 1 and 4 p.m. Monday. It won’t take long for the snow to become heavy so expect conditions to deteriorate within an hour or two after it starts. Heavy snow will be ongoing into Monday night before becoming lighter by Tuesday morning. A general 15-to-25 cm of snow for Prince Edward Island.

A northeasterly wind will increase with the falling snow and peak gusts of 60-to-80 km/h can be expected Monday evening and night. The high wind creating blowing snow and whiteout or near whiteout conditions should be anticipated. The wind will become northerly and diminish Tuesday morning but gusty conditions will be present through the day on Tuesday.

Avoid traveling in the worst of the weather conditions if you can. Have what you need to clear and remove snow on hand. The heavy snowfall and higher wind will increase the risk of power outages. Be prepared for delays and cancellations.
