‘Exciting time to be going away:’ Maritimers trade snow for sunny March break vacations

First at Five looks at where Maritimers are travelling for March Break.

As Maritimers hope to trade snowbanks for sunny beaches this March break, many are choosing their vacation destinations wisely.

Recent uncertainty in Cuba and Mexico has taken those popular destinations off the list for many people.

“With the temporary suspension of Cuba, our direct flights, most of them have sold out. There may be one or two random seats that are going unoccupied,” says Myranda Miller, a branch manager with Maritime Travel.

But Miller says demand is still up for other sunny destinations.

“The direct service is still going to Jamaica, Mexico, Dominican. We have a Nassau flight that will be departing tonight with Air Canada,” she says.

“We’ve had a cold, long winter. So, everybody’s looking to get out of here for a little bit. They are still traveling. Business is up. And it’s an exciting time to be going away.”

Lily Puicell, a traveller at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, says she is excited for her multi-destination trip.

“We’re going to like the Alps in the Mediterranean coast, Switzerland, Barcelona, Monaco,” she says. “We’re going on a guided tour, so we’re hopefully going to go on a bunch of tours and see a bunch of new places and eat new food.”

Best friends Jada Wokabi and Aysha Taylor are headed from Halifax to Costa Rica for spring break.

“We’re really super excited,” says Taylor. “Our first choice is (was) originally Hawaii, but Costa Rica, I feel it’s kind of a similar vibe.”
