Director Kevin Williamson talks ‘Scream 7′ and the franchise’s legacy

Kevin Williamson, the creator of Scream and the director of the latest installment, chats with Lataevia Beezer.

Thirty years after the first “Scream” film opened in theatres, “Scream 7” debuted with a franchise-best $64.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Creator, and the director of the latest installment, Kevin Williamson said it was exciting but also daunting to step into the director’s chair.

“My first instinct was to say yes when they asked me because, at the core, I am a storyteller and I wanted to expand that,” he said in an interview with Your Morning Atlantic’s Lataevia Beezer. “Beyond the page I wanted a paint a picture in all ways and that’s why I feel it was a great challenge.”

In the seventh installment Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescot along with original cast members Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Matthew Lillard.

Williamson said Campbell was the one who asked him to direct the film.

“It was very special, exciting and emotional experience. We work really well together and we had a blast,” he said.

Williamson said thirty years later it’s mind blowing to see how many people are still wanting a new film.

“I am so thrilled, it has grown beyond my wildest dreams. When we did Scream one, I was just trying to make my way as a writer. I wrote this script as a sample to get another job. Little did I know it would find its way to a studio.”
