B.C. Premier John Horgan says the government will make a significant announcement this week about Sooke Road, hinting at possible safety improvements following a fatal crash on the route last month.

Horgan said the announcement will address safety concerns and traffic on the West Shore.

Sources tell CTV News the announcement will likely involve lane-widening, improving the road's shoulder and eliminating dangerous curves.

The announcement comes amid renewed calls for upgrades on Highway 14, after a man died in a head-on crash in December.

A study looking at possible safety upgrades was completed in 2017, but the new provincial government found it didn't go far enough and decided to expand the study.
