Officials say a young man has died from his injuries following a reportedly accidental shooting on Salt Spring Island.
Salt Spring RCMP confirmed they responded to the reported shooting at a home where six youths, including the victim, were present early Sunday morning.
He was transported to hospital in Vancouver but succumbed to his injuries Sunday afternoon, according to the BC Coroner's Service.
The youth's identity remains unknown.
Salt Spring RCMP, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and the coroner's service are investigating the death.
CTV News has learned that Gulf Islands Secondary School, located on Salt Spring Island, has advised parents that a student was hospitalized in a "serious incident" over the weekend.
The school said a police investigation was in progress but declined to share further details.
The school district has provided additional supports for students and staff impacted by the incident.
It has also asked for privacy for the family involved.
