While the snowfall on the South Island could be called underwhelming, snow piling up north of the Malahat caused problems for some mid-island drivers Friday.

An SUV crashed into the yard of a Nanaimo home, flipping onto its roof, just off the Island Highway at Millstone Avenue and St. George Street.

A tow truck crew helped flip the vehicle upright, back on its wheels, around noon.

Police said that speed and road conditions were factors in the crash.

Another rollover happened in nearby Lantzville near McKercher Road around 9 a.m.

A vehicle careened into a ditch, flipping onto its roof as well.

While the white stuff shut down schools in the Comox Valley and Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo-Ladysmith schools remained open Friday.

Officials said there were no major injuries in either crash.
