Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for eastern Vancouver Island and Greater Victoria, with gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour expected in some areas Tuesday.

The strong westerly winds are expected to develop near the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the afternoon when a cold front moves in on B.C.’s South Coast.

Gusts in Greater Victoria and on the island’s east coast from Courtenay to Campbell River will be strong enough that they could damage tents and awnings at outdoor events, snap tree limbs and toss loose objects around, according to Environment Canada.

The winds are expected to ease overnight as the cold front moves on to the B.C. Interior.

A special weather statement for wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres an hour is also in effect on the east side of the island from Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay

Environment Canada is asking residents to report cases of severe weather to ec.tempetepacifique-pacificstorm.ec@canada.ca or by using the Twitter hashtag #BCStorm.
