A major route in Saanich will be shut down for six months as crews replace the Wilkinson Bridge.

Wilkinson Road will be closed between Mann Avenue and Greenlea Drive as it replaces the aging structure that bridges the Colquitz River.

The road will be shut down to traffic Monday, June 6, until November.

Motorists in the neighbourhood should plan their commute accordingly, the city said in a media release.

The bridge improvement project will include new bike lanes, sidewalks, trails and upgrades to existing utility infrastructure.

The Colquitz River Trail will also be extended.

Access to the road by emergency services, waste collection and recycling pick-up will be maintained at Greenlea Drive and Mann Avenue on Wilkinson Road.

Wilkinson is classified as a high-use transit road in Saanich that sees up to 15,000 vehicles per day.

The new bridge will be built to withstand a major seismic event, according to the city.
