It’s been a sunny hot week on Vancouver Island, but believe it or not, we can’t call it a heat wave.

Yes, temperatures have been in the 30’s in Port Alberni all week, which is above the climatological average of 24°C-25°C for this time of year, but they haven’t been hot enough.

Really? Yes. Really.

A heat wave is officially defined by Environment Canada as ‘three or more consecutive days when the maximum temperature is 32°C or more”. Port Alberni missed the streak this week by 1.2 degrees on Tuesday afternoon.

If you love the heat and get excited about reaching weather milestones, don’t worry. It’s only late July. We’ve still got August to go and temperatures are typically warmer in the month to come.

You can be sure I’ll be keeping an eye on the thermometers!
