New details are coming to light after a Victoria man was allegedly stabbed to death by his friend in a small Mexican town.

Roger Corbett, a 48-year-old father of four, was found dead in a home in Chicxulub, about 300 kilometres west of Cancun, on Sunday.

He was allegedly slain by friend Brian Slater, also from Victoria, according to reports from Mexican media.

Randy Bowser, a fishing charter captain and friend of Slater’s, said he was supposed to take Slater and two others on an excursion the day after the murder.

“I sat there Monday for about an hour after they were supposed to be there and they never showed up. No email, no call, no nothing,” said Bowser. “I made a few phone calls and I was just in awe of what I heard had happened. It’s just unbelievable. We just can’t fathom it here.”

A source close to Corbett said he travelled to Chicxulub to stay at his friend’s home.

It’s unclear exactly what happened, but there are rumours a party got out of control before the stabbing occurred.

“From my understanding, there was a lot of drugs and alcohol unfortunately in use. The party they were having apparently turned violent, a knife was drawn,” said Bowser. “What I heard was somebody tried to take the knife from another person, and somebody was stabbed. The police were called, they couldn’t get into the gate, they had to jump over the gate to get in.”

Mexican newspapers are publishing in-depth accounts of the deadly night, reporting how a drug, alcohol and even sex-fueled party at Slater’s home ended in bloodshed.

One publication reported Slater came out of the house covered in blood, yelling to neighbours about what he had done.

A website for Mexico’s attorney general says a foreign citizen was stabbed in the liver, and Canada’s Global Affairs would only confirm that a Canadian man was murdered in Mexico, and another Canadian was in custody.

Bowser, who has lived in the town for 16 years, said the area is usually very safe and quiet.

“It’s just very uncommon to hear something like this,” he said. “We’re still very sad at what has happened and our condolences definitely to all of the families and individuals that are involved.”
