A water main break in a residential View Royal neighbourhood sent a deluge more than 100 feet into the air, drenching a nearby home.

View Royal Fire Rescue confirmed the water main break occurred on Gibraltar Bay Drive in the West Shore community after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

A bystander contacted the fire department about the geyser, saying that he had seen water shooting into the air from down the street.

The jet sprayed with such force that it blew a manhole cover right off and flooded the street.

View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hirst estimated it shot as high as 105 feet, or more than 30 metres, in the air, sending water cascading off the roof of a nearby house.

Crews were able to shut down the main at the source and the owners of the home are currently assessing the state of the house and their possessions.

No word on the cause of the water main break.
