A Victoria pot shop’s rezoning application has been approved by the city, allowing for the retail sale of cannabis.

The city’s mayor and council approved the application for the Trees Dispensary on Yates Street.

Trees Dispensary is now the first cannabis retailer to be zoned under the city’s new rules.

The decision was made following a public hearing.

Mayor Lisa Helps said other pot shops have applied, but none have had their public hearing yet.

“This was the first public hearing and very surprised no opposition, only two people spoke and they spoke in favour that the applicant did a really good job so I think that’s part of it,” Helps said. “We’ve had no complaints about that location.”

The Victoria pot shop says it was "thrilled" with council's decision.

"Our goal is to make this location the model for what a dispensary should look like and should function like," said budtender Michael Fleury. "We've passed all of the inspections, we've done everything and matched it all with flying colours, the only thing standing between us and a full business license was this land use application."

Fleury hopes to have a business license within the next few weeks, but says that might be a bit too optimistic.
