Victoria city council is one step closer to evicting the abandoned and derelict vessels anchored in the Gorge Waterway.

According to the city, there are 24 vessels and four floating wharves illegally situated in the Gorge.

City crews have posted notices on the vessels stating owners have until Oct. 28 to remove them.

If the vessels aren’t removed by then, the city said it will get an injunction and remove them itself.

In May, city council approved changes to limit long-term mooring to a maximum of 48 hours and not for more than 72 hours in a 30-day period.

A notice was previously issued in mid-June that requested boats and vessels be removed by July 18.

Three vessels voluntarily left the area, according to the city.

City staff is currently working with Pacifica Housing to offer outreach services to people living aboard the boats.

An open forum will be held on Oct. 25 at the Victoria West Community Centre from noon to 2 p.m.

The changes will ensure the Gorge Waterway is used for recreational purposes only.

The city is also working on removing two sunken vessels from the area.
