Mounties have released the identity of the victim whose burned remains were found in a vehicle in Port Renfrew last month.

Police have identified the man as 49-year-old Bruce Edward Carlson.

Sooke RCMP said officers were called to the Pacheedaht First Nation just after 10 a.m. on Dec. 27 for a report of a burned vehicle and possible remains inside.

Officers found the victim inside a grey 2004 Pontiac Grand Am.

Mounties continue to investigate the death along with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, the BC Coroners Service and the Integrated Forensic Identification Section.

Foul play has not been ruled out.
