Firefighters in Campbell River are calling a vehicle fire suspicious after crews were called to the same area twice in one week.

A vehicle was fully engulfed in flames by the time fire crews arrived at the South Alder Street property on Saturday just before 2:30 a.m.

Fire officials said their initial priority was making sure the flames didn’t spread to the nearby home.

“Just three evenings ago we attended the same address for a small fire in the same vehicle, that fire was contained to a small area,” deputy fire chief Thomas Doherty said.

No one was hurt in Saturday’s blaze.

The fire department said this type of fire is a cause for concern because of its proximity to homes.

“At this time of evening fires on the exterior can go undetected for some time and quite often those will spread up outside of the house into the attic space,” Doherty said. “The homeowner would have no idea that there’s even an incident occurring outside.”

The investigation has been turned over to the RCMP.
