Unionized employees at the company that operates some bus services in the Cowichan Valley have served notice they will walk off the job on Wednesday.

Talks between BC Transit's contractor, First Canada, and the workers' union broke down last week and Unifor has served 72 hours strike notice.

Unifor spokesman Stu Shields says the workers are in a legal strike position today but the walkout was postponed to allow riders – especially the 300 to 400 who take the Cowichan commuter into Victoria every day – to make alternate arrangements.

Job action would also impact fixed-route service in the Cowichan Valley and Ladysmith but it does not apply to local service in the Lake Cowichan area.
