Two teenagers are in custody after a volunteer with the RCMP was shot in the head with a BB gun Sunday morning.

The incident happened on McDonald Park Road and Resthaven Drive in North Saanich around 1 a.m.

Two Citizens on Patrol volunteers were patrolling the area when they heard a "bang" and one of them felt a sharp pain in the head, Sidney North Saanich RCMP say.

The injured individual was driving a vehicle at the time and another volunteer was with him.

Police and paramedics were called and determined the volunteer had been hit with a metal BB pellet. He was treated on scene by paramedics.

A small pellet was later found on the back seat of the vehicle.

The item used to fire the pellet was seized by police.

The incident is believed to be random and not targeted, RCMP say.

Officials are reminding the public of the dangers associated with using "projectile-type" weapons.

The investigation is ongoing.
