Two teenagers who were struck by an SUV on a Nanaimo highway last week have died from their injuries, the BC Coroners Service confirmed on Wednesday.

The crash happened on the Island Highway at Mostar Road on Friday around 10:30 p.m.

According to police, four teens were trying to run or walk across the crosswalk against a red light.

Two of the teens were hit and airlifted to hospital with critical injuries.

The 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy were both foreign exchange students enrolled in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District.

Maria Hildebrant Cereija died at Victoria General Hospital on Monday, according to the BC Coroners Service.

The 15-year-old was from Mexico City and was temporarily living in Nanaimo.

The second teen died at British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver on Monday.

His identity isn't being made public until all family members have been notified.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
