Fifteen tonnes of debris from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan is set to be removed from waters along B.C.'s coast on Saturday.

The District of Ucluelet says the consolidated debris is being moved by helicopter lines to a barge that will then be pulled by a tugboat out of Campbell River.

The removal is part of a larger project to clear debris from the rugged shorelines and beaches of Vancouver Island.

A total of 40 tonnes of collected debris is expected to be delivered to Richmond over the next week for recycling.
