Police say a pickup truck that collided with a motorhome on the Pacific Rim Highway Monday, killing a man and shutting down the route for hours, was stolen.

The crash happened two kilometres west of Ucluelet Junction when a vehicle reportedly crossed the centre line of the highway, hitting the other head-on.

Both vehicles burst into flames and there are reports the driver of the pick-up truck may have been trapped inside. He died on scene. Two people in the motorhome were taken to hospital with minor injuries, and have since been released, according to RCMP.

RCMP and fire crews from Ucluelet and Tofino responded and crash analysts spent several hours combing over the crash site.

Police later determined the truck he was driving was reported stolen overnight in Nanaimo.

The highway was closed in both directions for hours and reopened just after midnight.

The condition of the people in the motorhome is unknown.

Police haven't said whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
