A sewage pipeline leak in a Nanaimo park has forced the closure of a public beach as crews work to repair it.

Morningside Park is completely closed to the public until further notice after treated sewage effluent was spotted surfacing near the park beach on Tuesday, according to the Regional District of Nanaimo.

People are being asked to stay away from the shoreline and out of the surrounding water until the leak is fixed.

The effluent is said to come from a treated sewage line connected to the Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre.

The district says it has contacted nearby residents, First Nations, regulatory bodies, the City of Nanaimo and the local school district to provide updates on the repair.

A buried section of the pipe in Morningside Park was expected to be replaced this summer, according to the district's website.
