For the first time ever, a Canadian surfer has snagged a medal in international competition – and she's only 14 years old.

Tofino's Mathea Olin took home the gold in women's longboard and bronze in women's shortboard at the Pan American Surfing Championships in Peru.

Team Canada made history at the competition, with Olin's medals representing the first time international hardware has been collected by a Canadian surfer.

Overall, Canada finished fourth in national standings at the Pan American Surfing Games.

The win comes as Olin and other Canadian surfers push to appear in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The 2020 Games will mark the debut of surfing as an Olympic sport.

It remains unclear how surfers will qualify for the 2020 Oylmpics, but it's expected that the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima will be significant.
