Paramedics rushed nine people, including a two-year-old child, to hospital after a fire broke out in Oyster River, near Comox.

Firefighters arrived at the home to find all occupants had escaped, thanks to functioning smoke detectors that alerted them to the blaze.

The family also had a working extinguisher that was used to knock down some of the flames, according to fire officials.

The fire was sparked in a lower-rear bedroom where the two-year-old was sleeping.

The child was taken to a Comox hospital with undisclosed injuries. and then airlifted to Victoria.

"It appears that they had an electric heater in there that a blanket may have fallen up against and probably overheated and started on fire," said Oyster River Fire Chief Bruce Green.

Firefighters praised the family for having both working detectors and a fire extinguisher, and said damage to the home was minimal.
