The owner of the Tally-Ho Hotel in Victoria is refuting rumours that the business closed abruptly.

Online reports surfaced over the weekend stating the hotel closed its doors without warning and that staff were locked out.

The owner said the speculation was “completely false” and the closure had been planned.

“We need to take some time and figure out the best long-term for the property,” Wayne Hopkins told CTV News.

According to Hopkins, staff at the hotel were notified about the closure two months ago.

Employees were either helped with finding new employment or took a job at the Tally-Ho Sports Bar and Grill and The Hideaway Café.

Hopkins added the hotel stopped taking reservations a while ago.

The building is old and doesn’t make money in the winter, Hopkins says.

He adds that there is no timeline and he's unsure when and if the hotel will re-open.

Management will now work on figuring out whether the property will undergo renovations or take on a “whole new concept.”

Both the Tally-Ho Sports Bar and Grill and The Hideaway Café will remain open.
