A man was taken into custody peacefully following a police incident in Sayward Wednesday afternoon.

At around 5:30 p.m., RCMP issues a media release that they were searching for a distraught and possibly armed man in the northern Vancouver Island village in what they called an “ongoing incident.”

The man was believed to be holed up behind an elementary school on a mountain ridge in the town.

The school was locked down and kids were sent home safely as police searched for the man.

Other detachments descended on Sayward to assist RCMP.

Police confirmed the incident was over and the man had been taken into custody without incident just before 7 p.m.

Details of what prompted the heavy police response are unclear.
