For the first time in several years the Comox Valley was home to the ultimate fall attraction: a corn maze.

But the fun was short-lived after a storm swept over Vancouver Island.

The owners of Coastal Black Estate Winery in Black Creek said the eight-acre maze took months of planning and hard work.

“We planted the whole thing, we fertilized the whole thing, we cut out the whole maze,” Daniel Ludwig told CTV News.

It was all ready to go and even had its official opening last weekend.

Then the season’s first big storm hit on Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing heavy rain and winds to the region.

“At first it was kind of like a shock and [I] didn’t really know what to think,” Daniel said. “To have it just flattened… was definitely kind of a bummer.”

The Comox Valley hasn’t seen a corn maze in quite some time, this being the first attempt in years.

“This was our big thing this year,” Justine Ludwig said. “We were hoping for the first year in many years a corn maze would be in the Comox Valley.”

The business owners say they have plenty to offer the community over the Thanksgiving weekend including hay rides, pumpkin ring toss and their popular pumpkin trebuchet/catapult.

They’re not letting the weather dampen their corn maze ambitions, saying they’ll give it another go next year.
