A man in his 70s is dead after he was struck by a vehicle along one of Courtenay’s busiest roads Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses say a husband and wife were walking along Cliffe Avenue around 2 p.m. when the husband was hit by the vehicle.

The driver continued on to strike two vehicles, then drove a bit further before crashing into two more vehicles and coming to a stop.

The wife did not suffer injuries in the crash.

Paramedics could be seen performing CPR on the man at the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Police haven’t confirmed any details, but the BC Coroners Service confirmed a man in his 70s was killed.

The incident left several blocks of Cliffe Avenue closed and witnesses badly shaken.

It’s unclear whether the driver is facing any charges, and investigators haven’t said whether drugs, alcohol or speed were considered factors.

DriveBC said it expected the road to reopen at around 5:30 p.m.
