Investigators in Nanaimo say a man has been charged with second-degree murder days after another man died from an apparent assault.

Police cordoned off an alleyway near a 7-Eleven on Nicol Street Thursday, about a block away from an apartment building where a man died Monday.

Officers confirmed it was linked to the ongoing homicide investigation and later announced they had made an arrest in the case.

John Albert Buchanan, 46, was arrested without incident at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

Charges were sworn Thursday morning against Buchanan, who will be held in custody until his next court appearance on Sept. 26.

The man killed has been identified as 42-year-old Richard Steven Sitar, whose family has been notified.

A forensic autopsy will be performed on Sitar, investigators said.

Neighbours told CTV News they heard loud music and screaming coming from a suite in the building Monday evening.

RCMP say they won’t be releasing any more information as the matter is now before the courts.
