A search has resumed for a person who dove off a bridge into the Courtenay River Wednesday night and did not appear to resurface.

Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue were called in just before 9 p.m. following reports that two people had jumped from the 5th Street Bridge.

“Apparently two people jumped at the same time, one on one side of the bridge and one on the other, and the fellow who surfaced noticed the other hadn’t,” said search manager Paul Berry.

Berry said the crew scoured the area downstream from the bridge all the way down to the Courtenay River Estuary until the search was called off at around 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

He said while it’s common for people to jump from the bridge and water levels are deep, it wouldn’t be the first time someone has failed to surface after a dive.

RCMP have reportedly spoken with the other diver.
