Victoria Police have confirmed U.S. law enforcement is now involved in the search for a former Olympic rower who went missing last week.

Harold Backer, 52, told his wife last Tuesday he was going for a bike ride and hasn’t been seen since.

Police said a man matching Backer’s description boarded a Black Ball Ferry bound for Port Angeles in Washington State on Nov. 3, but it’s unclear what he did after the ferry arrived.

Backer, a fixture in the Brentwood rowing community, also rowed for Canada in the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics.

He is believed to be wearing a red cycling jersey and black riding pants, carrying a black backpack, and could be riding his Cannondale road bike.

Port Angeles Police have been called in to the investigation and are fielding tips south of the border.

Friends of Backer’s travelled to Port Angeles over the weekend to help with the search and combed trails near Hurricane Ridge, a popular biking area.

Anyone who sees him or knows of his whereabouts is asked to call police at 250-995-7654.
