Police confirm a 55-year-old woman was found dead along the Alberni Highway in Coombs, but say it doesn't appear to be the result of foul play.

RCMP were spotted near a vacant pub, the Frontiersman Bar and Grill, late Sunday night and throughout the day Monday, sparking questions about why they were there.

Oceanside RCMP have now confirmed they were called to the area in the 2400-block of the Alberni Highway, for a report of a "man down."

They found the woman's body upon arrival and say they're now investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and trying to track down her next-of-kin.

RCMP, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and the BC Coroner's Service are all investigating the death and say there's no reason to believe the public is at risk.

Police didn't release any details on the investigation at first, leaving many to speculate why they cordoned off the area for so long.

“We drove past here this morning and they had it all taped off, and there was guys who looked like they were going inside the building and they were all in their white suits and they had police officers and everything. It looked like a full-on investigation,” said one witness.

“And then when I came back from the lake they were all around the side of the place, kind of looking into the bush area and taking notes.”Despite the attention from neighbours, police aren’t saying much about what they’re investigating.

CTV News also spoke with the property owner, who said officers weren’t inside either of the two buildings on site. He said he believed the investigation was focused on an area near the highway.

On Wednesday, police said that investigators determined no foul play is suspected and the investigation will now be turned over to the BC Coroner's Service.
